RED SKINS ARE FICTIONAL
CORTÉS IS DESPICABLE

It’s hard for to closely identify with the Native American community, but when Youth Action Council attended Decolonize This Place, a protest on Christopher Columbus Day at the American Museum of Natural History, I was entirely empathetic. My knowledge of Native Americans is extremely limited. I used to think that Native Americans roam around in loincloths, hunting buffalo (entirely due to my ignorance). Our day at the museum was enlightening. I realized that our society marginalizes this group of people entirely— and I hate that I was a part of that. We let a team be called “Redskins.” We let people walk around in feather headdresses on Halloween. This all stems back to Christopher Columbus and his decimation of the Arawak people. Since then, the United States has had multiple acts of marginalization towards the Native American people, such as the Indian Removal Act. Our systematic oppression of Native Americans must end. I wrote this poem to commemorate them. Visibility is all they wish for and it’s not a difficult thing to give.
